Background
Israel Katz has served in Israeli politics for over two decades. A member of Likud, he held multiple cabinet positions including finance, intelligence, and foreign affairs before becoming defense minister in November 2024.
Role in the 2026 Iran War
Katz took charge of Israel’s military operations during the joint US-Israeli campaign against Iran that began on February 28, 2026. He coordinated with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth on Operation Roaring Lion and Operation Epic Fury.
When a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon was brokered by US President Donald Trump on April 17, 2026, Katz called the truce “temporary.” He stated that the IDF was not withdrawing from territory in southern Lebanon and would complete remaining missions if necessary.
“IDF holds and will continue to hold all areas it has cleared and taken over,” Katz said in a statement.
The following day, the IDF confirmed attacks on Hezbollah operatives in southern Lebanon, marking the first acknowledged violations of the ceasefire.
